I love books. The way they look, scattered on a coffee table or piled high on a shelf. The promise they hold inside their covers of stories, facts and information. Even better, old, historical books, possibly with a light scattering of dust and a musty aroma. So to be asked to shoot an event in a great library, such as this one at One Great George Street, was pretty exciting for me.
Home to the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Grade II listed One Great George Street is also a leading conference, meetings and events venue and the library, a wonderful reference source for all its members, is now being used for events for the first time.
With its high, ornate ceilings, balconies and spiral staircases, the room is truly something else. I love the fact that in every nook and cranny there is a painting or bust of an historical figure and everywhere you look, piles and piles of books of course!
As a venue space, this stunning historic library is now in a soft-launch phase prior to a bigger revamp next year, but it’s now open for evening bookings. Hence was I was asked to photograph it, so that the One Great George Street could have a selection of images to use for future marketing of the space.
