I was commissioned by Lambeth Council to photograph a stunning social housing block which they were restoring to modern standards for new tenants to move in. They wanted to keep as many of the original features as possible, yet make it a practical place for families to live. It’s always great to photograph something, which, on a personal level, I believe is a great project, and, as I have a bit of an obsession with old buildings, this was perfect for me to shoot.
This is the shell of the building on my first visit. I loved the light spilling through the windows here onto the peeling vintage wallpaper:
The second time I visited, some more work had been done, but you could see which parts of the building were being kept, such as this gorgeous fire place, which has real character.
I also enjoyed checking out the roof, which reminds me of Mary Poppins, do you know which bit I mean?
The outside remains stunningly impressive, though now cleaned up with fresh paint, renewed windows and the all important, insulation.
A thoroughly enjoyable project to be involved in shooting, the only downside is no matter how much I tried to persuade them that the flat would need an ‘artist in residence’ it was not to be….
